South Australia Bans Single-use Plastics!

A ground breaking achievement by the South Australian Government to ban single-use plastics! 🙌

Legislation was passed to phase out single-use plastic straws⁣⁣, drink stirrers and ⁣cutlery, closely followed by oxo-degradable plastic products and expanded polystyrene food and beverages (such as cups, bowls, plates and clam-shell containers) 12 months after commencement.

Plastic producers will no longer hide behind misleading products such as "oxo-biodegradable" and "plant-based plastics" that are worse for our recycling systems than the nominal amount of plastic that actually gets recycled. These products confuse consumers and contaminate waste streams that could have otherwise been recycled.

The Cotton On Foundation (COF) knows first hand, after trying 100% recycled plastic (rPET) and plant-based plastic bottles, that the outcome of discarded bottles is the same – these products simply don't get recycled. In response to problematic plastic bottles, Wallaby and COF have launched Australia's first 100% aluminium bottled water, made from up to 70% recycled content. They even use a 100% aluminium and resealable closure! ♻️
